3 Days Grace Period Introduced by RBI for Credit Card Payment

The Reserve Bank of India has updated the Credit Card Payment rules. Effective from April 1, 2027, under the revised framework, a missed credit card payment will get a three-day window before an account is tagged as “past due” or any late fee is applied.

Key highlights

1. The RBI has updated Credit Cards and Debit Cards: Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2026.

2. Borrowers will get a three-day window before delayed payments are tagged as “past due” or attract penalties.

3. Penalties to be applied on the outstanding amount after the due date instead of the total billed amount.

4. The count of delayed days still starts from the original due date.

What does the new rule mean for credit card holders?

1. The credit cardholder will get a three-day cushion to repay their dues if they miss their payments.

2. However, if the cardholder is unable to pay the due amount even after the three-day window, delayed days would be calculated from the original due date.

3. Interest charges and billing cycles are unaffected.

4. Credit score reporting will be done only after the three-day mark is crossed.
