Google Pay UPI Supports RUPay Credit Cards in India

Introduction

Unified Payment Interface in India has made transactions easy for people. India is witnessing a technological revolution and accepting it with a whole heart. UPI transactions are one of the domains that have recently changed the traditional transaction methods in India. India is slowly becoming cashless and digital. Apps like Google Pay, Phone Pay, Bharat Pay, and Paytm have changed the age-old scenario of doing transactions. Recently, the Google Pay payment app has enabled credit cards for transactions. 

UPI-based payment app Google Pay has recently given a new facility to their customers. The app in association with the national bank has provided an additional benefit to their customers to link their RUPay credit card to the app. This is a huge step taken by Google Pay to ease the burden of people who are facing financial difficulties. Users can now pay digitally from their credit cards. This new updation in the technology of UPI will bring ease to the users and shall also benefit able for people who have less cash in their accounts.  

RuPay announced that the feature is now available to all RuPay credit card holders from Axis Bank, Indian Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, HDFC Bank, Punjab National Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Union Bank of India. In lieu of this, Sharath Bulusu, Director of Product Management at Google, said, "Google Pay is a partner to India's financial ecosystem - enabling millions of users to safely and conveniently make digital payments every day. His latest announcement is a reflection of our commitment to contribute to the Government's vision to boost digital payments in India and play a significant role in the country's credit journey. This feature will give Google Pay users more flexibility and choice in making payments and will drive greater adoption of digital payments in the country." 

How to activate RUPay credit card on Google Pay? 

  • Open the application of Google Pay on iPhone or Android. 

  • Click on the settings and tap on the RuPay credit card on UPI

  • Select the bank that has issued you the RuPay credit card.

  • Set a unique UPI PIN by 

(a) entering the last six digits of the card number and expiry, 

(b) entering the OTP from your bank.

  • Your UPI will be linked with the RuPay credit card for transactions.

  • You can use the credit card during UPI payments by entering the set UPI PIN the same way you do UPI transactions.

Conclusion

The initiative by RBI and Google Pay of offering UPI transactions through credit cards is a big revolution. the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allowed the linking of RuPay credit cards to the UPI platform in June 2022. This initiative was a step toward accessing the convenience of digital payments. It will bring ease to the users as well as will help them when they are low in their account balance. In addition to Google Pay, Phone Pay another UPI-based payment app might also offer the feature of transacting through credit cards in the future.
